Our Firewood

Most of our premium firewood is sustainably sourced from the northern NSW coastal region around Grafton, harvested with permission from the Forestry Corporation of NSW.

What makes our firewood different?

The timber we supply was once considered a by-product of the traditional timber industry. The long, straight logs are selected for construction and manufacturing, while the remaining hardwood — strong, dense and full of energy — was previously left unused.

Instead of letting this valuable resource go to waste, we recover and repurpose it into high-quality, cost-effective firewood designed to keep your home warm through the coldest months.

We supply sought-after NSW coastal hardwood varieties including:

  • Blackbutt
  • Stringybark
  • Spotted Gum
  • Flooded Gum

These are not soft, fast-burning timbers. They are dense Australian hardwoods known for their long burn time, strong heat output, and minimal ash production.

In fact, we burn the very same firewood in our own home. It produces consistent, powerful heat and leaves very little residue behind — meaning less cleaning, longer-lasting warmth, and better overall value for your money.

When you choose our firewood, you’re choosing sustainable sourcing, efficient energy, and dependable warmth you can count on.

Cereal mulch is a type of organic mulch made from dried plant stalks left after crop harvesting, typically from cereal crops like corn, wheat, or other grains.

This type of mulch has several key characteristics:

Composition: Created from the residual stalks of harvested cereal crops

Decomposition Rate: Takes longer to break down compared to mulch from legume crops.

Colour: Light-coloured, which helps keep the soil cooler.

Characteristics of Cereal Mulch
Cereal mulch offers several benefits for gardening and agriculture:

  • Helps retain soil moisture

FAQs

Here are the Top 5 Frequently Asked Questions About Firewood in Australia, with clear, practical answers for you:

1. What is the best firewood to burn in Australia?

In Australia, hardwoods are considered the best firewood because they burn hotter and longer than softwoods. Popular choices include Blackbutt, Stringybark, Spotted Gum and Ironbark.

Hardwoods are denser, produce strong steady heat, and create long-lasting coals — making them ideal for home heating.

Softwoods burn faster and can create more smoke and residue.

2. How can I tell if firewood is properly seasoned?

Properly seasoned firewood should have:

  • Cracks in the ends of the logs
  • A lighter weight compared to green wood
  • A hollow sound when two pieces are knocked together
  • Moisture content below 20%

Seasoned firewood burns hotter, produces less smoke, and reduces creosote build-up in your chimney.

Unseasoned (green) wood contains too much moisture and will smoke heavily while producing poor heat output.

3. How much firewood do I need for winter?

This depends on:

  • The size of your home
  • How well insulated your house is
  • How often you use your fireplace
  • The climate in your area

As a rough guide in Australia, most households using wood as a primary heat source will use 3–6 cubic metres over winter.

Occasional users may only need 1–2 cubic metres.

4. Why is my firewood smoking so much?

Excess smoke is usually caused by:

  • Unseasoned (wet) firewood
  • Poor airflow in the fireplace
  • Closing the air vents too early
  • A dirty flue or chimney

Dry, seasoned hardwood combined with proper airflow will produce a cleaner, more efficient burn with less smoke.

5. How should I store firewood properly?

To keep firewood dry and ready to burn:

  • Stack it off the ground
  • Keep it covered on top but open on the sides
  • Store it in a well-ventilated area
  • Avoid fully wrapping it in plastic

Good airflow is essential. Proper storage keeps moisture out and ensures your firewood stays dry and efficient.
