ABOUT BENDIGO FIREWOOD AND SOIL

Our story

Your local suppliers

We source a large amount of firewood from the northern nsw coastal region through the NSW forestry commission.
This wood was once left behind after the timber industry picked the longer straighter logs which is used in many industries, including the building industry.

However, now it is being used as a great source of energy to heat your home.
It comprises NSW coastal hardwood variety’s such as Blackbutt, Stringy Bark, Spotted Gum and Flooded Gum.
This is what we burn mainly in our own home and it produces a high amount of heat and little ash, making it a good value firewood

THE HISTORY OF MAHERS TRANSPORT AND BENDIGO FIREWOOD AND SOIL.

Mahers transport started in 1998 after deciding there must be an easier way to make a living than shearing sheep.

We started buying grain from farmers in central Victoria and selling it to dairy farmers in Gippsland.

We gradually built this to where we were buying and selling 10000 tonnes per year.

In 2004, in conjunction with Phil Tracy (a dairy farmer from Gippsland), we bought a stockfeed mill in Bridgewater that had gone broke 3 times in 5 years.

This was considered a foolish move by some, but nevertheless Southern stockfeeds was born and we moved forward.

In 2012 we sold our share of Southern stockfeeds, and at this stage it was trading and manufacturing 130000 tonnes of grain and stockfeeds from Queensland to Gippsland.

In 2013, along with friends Dion Costigan and Rod Monti, Link Brokering was created.

This business helped farmers get the best prices for their grain, and sourced transport services to move their grain to market.

We continued to build relationships with people along the Australian East Coast.

We helped to create a more efficient model to maximise returns for growers and bring firewood and landscaping supplies to garden centres and firewood suppliers throughout Victoria , NSW and South Australia.

In 2022, we sold our share of Link Brokering, to concentrate on transporting and trading firewood.

In October 2023 we purchased 2.2 acres of land at 11 McDowells Road, East Bendigo in preparation for selling high grade firewood, and landscaping supplies, to Bendigo .

We used our extensive supply of contacts to sell our products, both Wolesale and Retail, in the most efficient and environmentally friendly way possible.

All the way through our business ventures, service has been our main priority.

We pride ourselves on giving honest advice and delivery on time in a friendly manner.

We look forward to meeting you at our yard soon.

Regards

Brendan & Debbie Maher

The practice of sourcing firewood from the northern NSW coastal region is both an innovative and sustainable approach to utilising resources that were once considered waste by the timber industry.

After the primary harvest, the shorter, less uniform logs left behind are now repurposed, providing a valuable resource rather than being discarded.

This not only helps in reducing waste but also contributes to the management of forest undergrowth, potentially reducing bushfire hazards.

The NSW Forestry Commission plays a pivotal role in this process, ensuring that the collection of firewood is conducted sustainably and in accordance with environmental standards. This ensures that the ecological balance of the forests is maintained, supporting biodiversity while providing economic benefits.

The types of wood – Blackbutt, Stringy bark, Spotted gum, and Flooded gum – are all hardwood varieties native to the NSW coastal region.

These species are known for their density and durability, which translate into excellent fuel properties for heating purposes. When used as firewood, these hardwoods burn hotter and longer than softer varieties, producing a high amount of heat. This makes them particularly suited for use in home heating systems during colder months.

Also, these hardwoods are characterised by their low ash production when burned. This is a significant advantage for homeowners, as it means less frequent cleaning of fireplaces or wood-burning stoves and reduced waste. The low ash content also indicates more complete combustion of the wood, which is a measure of efficiency and environmental friendliness, as it results in fewer pollutants being released into the atmosphere.

Using our firewood, particularly in your own home, showcases its practical benefits. The high heat output coupled with minimal ash production provides an efficient and environmentally friendlier heating solution.

By choosing our firewood, you not only enjoy the warmth and ambiance of a real wood fire but also contribute to sustainable forest management and waste reduction.

This makes it an excellent value for both the consumer and the environment.
